In their third successive County Cup match the Girls U11 Tigresses were against First Division opposition. Sadly it was not to be third time lucky but the Tigresses put on an excellent game of football that was admired by all watching. The Tigresses started on the attack and could have taken an early lead with Wilko having the best opportunity. St Albans were sharp on the attack and slipped their defenders. They came close to taking the lead when their shot hit the cross bar and their next shot went just wide. Libby, Abby and Naomi started to take control of the midfield and it was against the run of play that St Albans took the lead intercepting a pass from the back. The Tigresses kept up the pressure but could just not beat the keeper who made a number of fine saves. St Albans were dangerous on the counter attack and were extremely good at finishing. Their second goal was a particularly well taken shot from outside the box that rocketed into the top right hand corner. So the first half finished 2.0 to St Albans but still with everything to play for. In the second half Zoe took over in goal and was magnificent. Two incidents in particular are worthy of special mention. One was a save from a fierce long shot from outside the box, which she tipped over the bar. The other was amazing where she made four successive saves from short range in the box. The Tigresses continued to press for a goal with Becky and Bella now joining the attack. Despite all their chances the girls could just not find the net and the game finished 2.0 to St Albans. Player of the week went to Libby for her an excellent performance in midfield. As always the girls were gracious in defeat and can take great heart from this performance. As Andy said they are still in with a chance of winning the league and progressing in the League Cup. Well done girls!!!
The U12 Cheetahs Yellows got back to winning ways with a good team performance away to a decent Biggleswade United team. The boys started brightly and a forced error allowed Tom Grieveson to take a shot which came back off the post but back into his stride and he calmly finished for 1-0. Then Taylor Wilson chased a lost cause, robbed the keeper and made a yard of space for himself to get a shot away at an angle that made it 2-0. To be fair Biggleswade had a number of chances and should have had a penalty but the referee considered a shoulder to shoulder challenge to be fair when it looked to be a penalty to the hosts. At the start of the second half a superb early move ended with Charlie feeding a lovely pass through to Adam Mason who controlled it well before smashing home for 3-0. We changed a few things around and allowed Steffan Jones to have a run out up front and he rewarded us with a fourth goal from close range. The home side were then awarded a soft penalty, which I guess made up for the earlier decision, but their striker placed the shot wide of the post. They then scored a good goal when the striker beat three people with some clever close control before a good finish. The 'Yellows' finished in the ascendancy when Tom Grieveson broke in the box after Steffan had robbed a defender and he scored from close range for a fifth and final goal. A good all round team performance, with some lovely football at times, but full credit to Biggleswade as the scoreline probably flattered us slightly as they had a fair bit of good possession and played some good football in midfield and had a number of good chances to of made the game closer. Parents 'Player of the Week' went to the hard-working Adam Mason for another impressive display down the left.
